“The most fantastic and incredible rock in the world”

George Bernard Shaw 1910

The monks of Skellig Michael wanted more than to just believe in the Divine. They wanted to experience the Divine.

After his visit to the Skelligs in 1910, George Bernard Shaw wrote 'I tell you the thing does not belong to any world that you and I have lived and worked in: it is part of our dream world'.

With one of the local boat operators departing from Portmagee, Valentia or Caherdaniel, you can land on this unique island recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site. Climb the 618 steps chisled into the rock by hand and visit the early Christian monastery at the top. Archaeologists on site tell the stories of how the monks survived on this inhospitable rock.

For anyone who wishes to see the Skellig up close but cannot get to land on the island, the option to take a boat trip around the Skellig Rock with local boat operators from Portmagee is also available.
